Definition & AB Education Code"Sensory processing (sometimes called "sensory integration" or SI) is a term that refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioral responses. Whether you are biting into a hamburger, riding a bicycle, or reading a book, your successful completion of the activity requires processing sensation or "sensory integration."

Characteristics & Behaviours-Academic failure, clumsy, uncooperative, belligerent and disruptive
-In constant motion or fatigue easily (or both) -Withdraw when touched -Uncomfortable with movements such as swinging and sliding -Overly sensitive to sound -Sensitive to odours -Dislike getting hands dirty -Lack in fine motor movements -Lack creativity and variety in play |
StrategiesProprioceptive Strategies
-Engage students in using fidget toys and designate areas in the room for the student to pace or do any movements needs Vestibular Strategies
-Create heavy work for the student to do -Slow down our movements -Allow for brain breaks often -Repetitive & rhythmic movement games -Reinforce dominant hand use Visual Strategies
-Limit the amount of pictures hanging on the wall -Organize the images on the wall in a fashion that suits the students needs Auditory Strategies
-Use headphones or ear plugs and minimize verbal direction |
