Literacy Throughout Subjects
The one most important point that I took away from this class, was that literacy is essential for children and by implementing literature into all area's of school it will encourage and promote students to self direct their literacy skills.
Teaching Techniques
Below are four teaching strategies that enable teachers to enhance literacy among all subjects:
RAFT
RAFT writing is a technique that encourages the students to write with creativity, consider a different perspective, and practice writing for different audiences.
Role of Writer: Who are you as a writer? Audience: To whom are you writing for? Format: In what form are you writing? Topic: What are you writing about? |
Example
R-Movie Star? President? Chief? A-Yourself? Senator? Company? F-Love Letter? Diary? Newspaper? T-Weather? Environment? |
Word Wall
Creating a word wall in your classroom will prompt literacy and encourage the students in your classroom to self discover. Word walls will create confidences in the students to expand their vocabulary and have places to look when unsure about a word.
Think Pair Share
Think Pair Share encourages differentiated instructions through providing students time and structure for thinking on a given topic, enabling them to formulate individual ideas and share these ideas with a peer.
Think- Teacher asks high thinking questions that allows for discussion. Students will have time to think alone. (Key: stay away from yes and no question, does not allow for deeper thinking.) Pair- Students will get together and share their idea's, discuss their idea's, and ask questions that resonate with them. Share- Whole class discussion about topic. Have each set of partners share their thoughts and findings about the topic. Items to Concerned: 1. How will you group the students? 2.What is the target of Think Pair Share? 3.Element of sharing ( could be intimidating) how will you make it positive and safe? 4.What is following the Think Pair Share |
The Daily 5 was developed to enable teachers to deliver highly intentional, focused instruction to small groups and specific individuals while the rest of the class are concentrating on their reading and writing.
Daily 5 Tasks Read to Self: Silent read a good fitting book somewhere in the classroom. Work on Writing: Free writing in their own journals, allowing the students to write on subjects that interest them. Partner Reading: In partners reading a book. This will allow the students to develop their reading strategies, improve on fluency, and to hear one's voice. Word Work: Expanding one's vocabulary will help with greater fluency, and improve spelling. Listen to Reading: Listening to someone read to them, this will help them become better readers, by listening to the expression and fluency in the voice. |
